How to Achieve Your Goals in 2013 with Lean Six Sigma

If you are a bit like me, you sometimes wonder about what you want to achieve in life. At least you think about the things that you have not been able to realize up until now, but which you are determined about to do so pretty soon.

Perhaps you would like to have a better job? Or lose some weight and learn healthy habits? Spend more time with your family and friends?

With Lean Six Sigma, reaching one or more of those goals will become possible. 2013 Will be your year!

Just try it out and see it yourself >>> Lean Six Sigma Free Trial >>>>

One of my Lean Six Sigma Black Belt students, JY, did so. He is the perfect example of how to increase your earning ability and to get a better job.

Success Story of JY

JY joined our online Black Belt program last year to increase his earning ability. His reason would be that, although he had lots of practical experience in quality management and production supervision, he felt the need for a formal education in today’s most effective managerial problem-solving method: Lean Six Sigma.

JY being a process engineer at a Far-East Printed Circuit Board manufacturer, could easily find 2 improvement projects to work on.

With the first Lean Six Sigma project, JY reduced two major sources of part contamination by 13.8% and 33.3% in 8 months. This waste reduction saved his company an annual amount of $ 240,202. Parallel with his contamination project, JY started his second project: reduction of production time, and therefore an increase in production capacity of the bottleneck process step. The result: 300% capacity increase from producing 294 pieces per hour to 1200 pieces per hour!

How? Just by using our simplified Lean Six Sigma method: observing the current process, brainstorming with the team on possible improvements, and testing those assumptions.

This is what JY told me: these Lean Six Sigma projects – although they were not completely finished yet at that time – helped him to make a huge step in his career. He got a new position offered by a major manufacturer as General Manager.

While finishing his Black Belt program, JY increased his salary by 100%! Quite an achievement, wouldn’t you say? I can only ask you to agree with me on that one.

But is it something exceptional or strange? The answer is absolutely not. You can achieve the same results as JY did, if you only know that Lean Six Sigma is the key to open the door for your road to success.

JY is worth now gold for every company he joins. Achieving $240K savings with his first project, and then increasing production capacity by 300% with the second, JY’s doubled salary is just a tiny little expense that is worth paying for by any company.

Actually, JY is an excellent investment for any company. Like Brian Tracy said: “Good employees are free because they contribute more in dollar value than you pay them in salary and bonuses.”

A Semi-scientific Way To Set Your Priorities

Are You very busy and overloaded with lots of tasks, activities or projects?

You just don’t know how to set the right priorities?

In this article you’ll get some easy steps that I recently used in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt program when selecting the right projects for a multimillion company.

You can follow the same steps in your situation.

Step #1: Make a list

If you don’t have one yet start using a list. Put all the things, tasks, projects and activities you need/want to do on that list.

One of my project team wanted to reduce the workload at a Customer Service department. We started putting down on a piece of paper all the tasks they were carrying out every day. The length of the list surprised both them and their manager.

Getting clarity about the situation in this way enabled the team to set right priorities and increase efficiency even during peak-times. By the end of the Lean Six Sigma project the team has reduced the workload between 44% and 52%!

Step #2: Identify your customer

Sounds simple but you’ll realize there are many recipients of your work. Who are they? Make a list of them. Think about your end customer, your colleague from next door, your manager or supervisor…just to name a few.

They’ll judge your work. Whether you ask them or not. They decide whether you satisfy their needs or not. You better be clear on them because your work is to serve them the best you can.

One of my Black Beltstudents said that my Customer Requirement Matrix is the most effective tool he has ever seen.

Because in the matrix we record all the customers and stakeholders impacted and also their requirements concerning Quality, Time and Costs. Such overview helps to identify not only all the most important customers but also if there is a contradiction between the different requirements.

This Black Belt has just finished his first project removing 100% of inkt contamination from their production process of electrical parts.

Step #3: Identify 3 – 5 selection criteria (based on customer requirements)

Get the top 3 – 5 customers and identify their requirements. No more than 5. These are the requirements your customers find important. Think about their requirements concerning quality, delivery (time-related) or costs.

Some examples for such requirements:

– improves quality

– reduces wastes

– reduces lead times

– reduces complexity

– reduces costs

– increases sales

– easy to execute

– high potential / high demand

– supports strategy

– gives you high exposure

Just pick 3 to 5 and modify it to your own situation. These are the selection criteria to prioritize your tasks against.

In steps #4 though #8 you learn how to weight these criteria and correlate them to your tasks or projects to finally arrive to your laser-sharp priority list.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Program

Why Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification?A recent research by Monsterboard.com (biggest online job search database) in the USA, has shown that Black Belts earn at least the same as some one with MBA (master of business administration) degree: around 100.000 USD per year gross.I have MBA degree from Webster University St. Louis, campus Leiden, Netherlands. I was lucky because my employer paid around 30.000 USD for my education. Had I knew at that time about Lean Six Sigma and its effectiveness I certainly would not have followed MBA but would have started with Black Belt LSS rigth away. Why should you get your Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certificate? Lean Six Sigma Gives You Freedom To Choose

What is your plan for next year?

Are you still in your current job? Do you like it?

Or would you like to make a big step in your career. Maybe you are tired of the daily hassle and you would like to do something totally different.

You’ve spent maybe 5-10-20 years in your industry but you just cannot imagine yourself retiring from your current job.

It is not that you hate your work but you would like new challenges.  Maybe in a different industry.

Money may be important, but it’s not your primary motivation. Perhaps you’re satisfied with your current salary of $35,000 – $ 70,000 but you see the limitations. Earning $ 100 K is a little out of reach for now.

Getting out of your current job and do something really different with an reasonable $100 K or  more is actually what you want.

But how to get there?

You might be paralyzed by the idea of going for a business education program like MBA (Master of Business Administration).

You just don’t have $20,000 – $30,000 to spend and 3 or more years to study and HOPE you can monetize your efforts once…

Personally I would prefer something quicker, practical and cheaper…

I was in the same situation a few years ago.

While studied Chemical Engineering, working for 12 years in Finance, completing my MBA to broaden my chances…still I was not happy.

After getting my Black Belt Certification in Lean Six Sigma doors went open.

And you can get certified as a Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma in 1/3 of the time for 87% less

Actually even during my Black Belt training I was exposed to ALL kinds of business problems that had absolutely nothing to do with my prior education nor with my working experience.

My very first Lean Six Sigma project was in production: reduce size variation of a semi-finished product made of yarn.

  • I have never learnt about how to produce that semi finished product
  • I have never worked together on a specific project with machine operators
  • I have never been exposed to solving a production problem

Applying Lean Six Sigma method, following the 5 phases (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) I was able to achieve significant improvements in 6 months:

  • Variation in spiral size reduced for both width and thickness with resp. 26% and 42%
  • Defect rate reduced from 21% to 4% (target was: 7%)
  • Process was simplified
  • Hard savings: $112,500 per year

Do you want to learn Lean Six Sigma and enjoy the freedom to solve almost ANY business problems without any prior knowledge or experience?

Join the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Program starting on 16th of January 2012

Would you like to know more about the certification program, send me your question to peter.herku@gmail.com

Lean Six Sigma Tools: How Can A Method From 1870 Improve Your Profits?

During the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification program you learn how to combine time-tested, powerful methods in order to solve efficiency and quality issues.

Because those methods are based on universal truth and laws of nature you are going to be successful  with them whether you work in manufacturing, IT, financial services, government, energy, healthcare and the army.

One of the most important method I teach managers, board of directors, operators, etc. everybody in any organization is the Pareto-law.

Do you know this law?

Also known as 80/20 rule, meaning: 80 percent of the effects are caused by 20 percent of the causes. Like 80 percent of you sales is due to 20 percent of your customers.

Many people know this law but do not know how to use it in their daily work.

Like the Lean Six Sigma project team from a Sales and Customer Service Department of a big service company ($30 million annual sales). They knew the 80/20 rule but had no idea what it meant for them.

I was asked to help with my method and improve the profitability of this company.

The Problem…but what is it?

The company was doing OK but they did not know which customer are profitable and which is not.

The sales people were very busy but were not sure at all if their efforts and long working hours were spent with the highest return.

Don’t you have sometimes the question, whether you spend your precious time efficiently? I do.

After several attempts to describe our base line (the current situation of the profitability per customer), we could apply the Pareto-law as shown below.

Pareto-law in Action

First, we identified which customers are not profitable and we displayed the loss per customer in declining order. So on the left side of the graph you can see the customer with the highest loss. (the names of customers are hidden to protect their privacy.)

After this clear picture – and the “ah haa..” effect of the Sales managers. We continued to focus and make the project even smaller scoped – this is one of the success factors of Lean Six Sigma projects.

So now we continued with those customers where the company made losses – the left part of the graph.

In our specific case, applying Pareto-law, 7 of the customers (30%) caused 80% of the loss for the company.

This information helped us even further to focus on the reduction of the loss at these 7 customers.

Results after 4 month

To cut the story short, with our Lean Six Sigma project team we were able to reduce the loss by 40% at these 7 customers and increased the sales by $140,750 per year.

If you want to achieve such a great improvement at your organization using Pareto-law and a few other time-tested method, you can join the online Lean Six Sigma program at
